So this is how the Edomites lived?
One of the many extremely eroded rooms that can be found in Petra, Jordan. The city of Petra is mentioned in the Bible by the Hebrew name, Sela in Isaiah 16:1 ישעיהו. Both Petra and Sela mean “rock,” an appropriate name, since much of the city is carved into sandstone cliffs. These kind of desolate spaces is all that is left over there. Petra was in the land of the Edomites, who were descendants of Esau (as you already know). Esau was the enemy of YAH-SAR-EL (Yah-Chief-El) the name given to Ya'aqob (Jacob) Esau's brother. But יהוה had something cooking for Esau's red behind “Behold, I will make you small among the nations; you will be deeply despised.
The pride of your heart has deceived you— O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks whose habitation is the heights, who say in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ Obadiah 1:3 עבדיהו
For centuries, Petra seemed secure in its unassailable fortress of rock, but today its ruins lie uninhabited, in fulfillment of the prophetic Word against Edom (Esau) : “Edom will become an object of horror. Everyone who passes by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds. As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown along with their neighbors,” says יהוה, “no one will reside there; no man will dwell there. Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered pasture. Indeed, I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.” (Jeremiah 49:18 ירמיהו ).
Well dang! This is what it looks like thousands of years later ... not even crickets ... just wind-swept in these caverns.
